Dear HR Professionals

Prepare for a shift in your departments.

When I started in the field, local governments and titles still began with “Personnel”

Job requisitions. Manual screening and applicant tracking. So much data, most of it not digitized. Hey, it was 1995.

Interviews.

People. Hiring. Behavior. Classification, reclassification. Salaries. Benefits. Firing. Layoffs.

But now. Now – HR’s going to own part of cybersecurity.

Because it’s you who’ll help make it happen, if it’s going to happen. (It needs to) The human behaviors that come with cybersecurity culture, from onboarding to the values professed by the organization.

You’ll have help. Your communications team can help. Your IT security people, though you may have to ask for clarification on terms and understanding the risks of NOT being the organizational glue for secure behavior.

Secure behavior is the next layer of habits for people who work in organizations. For people who run households.

It’s natural for you. Shape the conversations. Start writing the job descriptions, though even the titles are elusive.

If you’re big enough to employ a Chief People Officer, the person’ll probably work for the CPO.

If not, start with a consultant. She’ll add a plan to integrate with your regular training, of course. Then conversations with staff. Make it real and relevant. Make it often and actionable.

Some thoughts, and seeking yours. Are you ready? Where do you start?

Technologists – say hello to a very powerful ally – HR.
