Tainted

There’s a wrap. Then a cap. Internal seal.

Before, there was merely a cap.

What changed? Malicious intent exploiting an easy target.

Cyanide. 1982.

Tylenol and its maker did nothing wrong – for the times. They packaged their goods as did their competitors. Packaged foods were also minimally sealed and contained.

But someone intentionally breached the packaging of several Tylenol bottles and introduced poison.

With 7 cyanide deaths, “the times” changed. I was 10 and terrified. The word “tainted” permeated the culture, probably borrowed from the song Tainted Love, released by Soft Cell the year before.

Now, visible package security. Again – wrap, cap, internal seal. Visible protection and defense in depth.

What’s your three-pronged security approach in these online times? The human equivalent to defense in depth, a term used by cybersecurity professionals to describe the myriad and varied types of intentional action they take to stop cybercriminals.

▦Knowledge and focus
Add information about online security to what you’re reading and following in media. If you’re not intentionally scouring for this type of news, though, you’re potentially only seeing it on LinkedIn or within training in your company. I checked APnews this morning, and only one article in the Technology section has a mention of cybersecurity.

▦Cyber hygiene – personal and professional

So many words and concepts to talk through regarding how to safely use the Internet – cyber hygiene.

Put your favorite tip in the comments. Brush and floss your online teeth regularly. Get check-ups from professionals (and consider learning enough to be one).

▦Conversations

To cap it off – keep online security top of mind. With your parents, kids, and peers. Because you’re using the Internet daily. Hourly.

And that’s a wrap.
