They Thought They Had Time

Thunderstorm

They thought they had time.

So they met at 6:30 a.m. today with plans to get the run in early before it got hot. Even though weather forecasted likely thunderstorms.

(They didn’t have time.) Booming sky cacophany hit right at the time they were likely 1.5 miles from the starting point.

So, of course, how high school cross country practice go/no go is like cybersecurity strategy.

⚡We think we can predict safety; however, there remain levels of risk. (Lightning just flashed; they’re still out there running)

⚡Like weather forecasters, we believe we know more than we do, control more than we do.

⚡Decisions are never certain; risk management is about risk reduction, not eradication.

⚡We don’t see all of the variables involved in a risk until after that risk has been realized. Much clearer then.

Doing our best with reviewing forensic data and building predictive patterns works often when people are aligned with the “and here’s what we’re going to do about it.”

And then they do.

Waterlogged kid should be home soon. With a story about how they probably should not have run today.

P.S. This is a bit general, with the ever-present goal of hoping you’re thinking about cybersecurity everytime you see my name or picture.

So, actionable focus area for micro organizations regarding cybersecurity. This isn’t exhaustive, but start here.

1. Know your assets and patch them. Computers, devices, printers, etc. If it connects to the Internet (or connects to something that connectes to the Internet), manage it intentionally.

2. Back up your data. Intentionally. Regularly.

3. Train your staff to combat digitally based fraud. We call it social engineering. To all of us, though, it’s fraud – something that’s fake. A scam.

While you’re training, add in the other elements of cyber hygiene: account access handling (password manager, strong passwords, multifactor authentication) , antimalware software, and others.

Follow for more. You’ll get a whole month solid of all things cybersecurity, in detail, upcoming in exciting October.

So, start there.

⚡And, don’t run in the thunderstorm.
